I Made Mujana: Over 27 Years of Service in Banking, Now Proud to Serve the Community Through BPR

Bangli – Dedication and long experience in banking have become a strong foundation for I Made Mujana, S.E., in leading PT BPR Mitra Bali Muktijaya Mandiri. For more than 27 years, he has served in the banking industry, both at commercial banks and at a Rural Bank (Bank Perekonomian Rakyat/BPR). Now, as Director of BPR Mitra Bali Muktijaya Mandiri, he is especially proud to serve small communities and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Met at his office on Jalan Pasar Kayuambua, Susut, Bangli, on Friday (January 31, 2025), Made Mujana shared his career journey. “I worked at commercial banks from 1995 to 2022, about 27 years. Then I joined a BPR in 2023 and have been here ever since. Why did I choose a BPR? Because I wanted to be closer to ordinary people,” he said.

According to him, the fundamental difference between commercial banks and BPRs lies in their approach and customer segments. “Commercial banks mostly serve wealthier clients, while at a BPR we deal directly with MSMEs and ordinary people who need access to capital. That is what interests me most,” he added.

Challenges as a Bonus
In banking, challenges are always present, especially in managing loans and ensuring customers repay on time. For Made Mujana, however, every challenge is an opportunity and a source of motivation.

“When there is a non-performing loan, I don’t see it as a misfortune but as a challenge. When we can approach the customer and they are eventually able to repay, that’s a bonus,” he said enthusiastically.

His greatest source of pride is being able to help people grow. “When the small businesses we support succeed and they thank us, that brings a special kind of happiness,” he said.

Family Support and Boundless Dedication
Although his job demands long hours, Made Mujana says he has his family’s full support. “My wife and children are very supportive. Even when I have to come home late, it’s not a problem. I work 24 hours a day for the community,” he said.

When asked whether working at a BPR was destiny or choice, he answered firmly, “I enjoy this work. I do it wholeheartedly.”

Approaching Targets with Composure
As a director, he naturally has targets to meet. But for him, targets are not a burden; they are part of a responsibility that must be handled with the right strategy.

“If a target is not met, what matters is that the reasons are clear and reasonable. Not everything can be forced, but we must keep trying,” he explained.

In managing the BPR, he ensures that every aspect is taken care of, from assets to customer service. “At a BPR, we have to be all-rounders and handle everything, unlike commercial banks, where roles are more specialized. That is exactly where the challenge lies,” he said.

Building Public Trust in BPRs
One of the greatest challenges for the BPR industry is building public trust. According to Made Mujana, a family-like approach is the key.

“At a BPR, we prioritize close, family-like relationships with our customers. We want them to feel comfortable and confident that a BPR is the right financial solution for them,” he said.

He also emphasized that BPRs are supervised by the Financial Services Authority (OJK), and customer deposits are guaranteed by the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS) up to IDR 2 billion.

“We want the people of Bangli to know that saving or borrowing at a BPR is safe. This is an institution guaranteed by the state, so don’t hesitate,” he stressed.

Optimistic About 2025
With the rapid pace of change and digitalization, Made Mujana recognizes that BPRs must keep innovating. Increasing capital and modernizing systems are essential steps to remain competitive.

“Without capital, we will fall behind. Everything is digital now, and that requires investment. That is why we continue to strengthen our foundation and seek the right investors,” he said.

Looking ahead to 2025, he is optimistic that BPR Mitra Bali Muktijaya Mandiri will continue to grow and benefit the community. “We remain focused on MSMEs. Loans can be disbursed within one to two days if the documents are complete. Even for collateral-free loans, we already have a system that makes the process easier for customers,” he said.

In closing, he encouraged young people not to hesitate to pursue a career in the BPR industry. “Working at a BPR is full of challenges, but it is also very rewarding. We manage other people’s money, so we must be responsible. Most importantly, we must be ready to face challenges and keep learning,” he concluded.

With this spirit and dedication, I Made Mujana demonstrates that working at a BPR is not just about business, but also about serving the community.
