Curbing NPLs, DPK Perbarindo Bali Holds Credit Analysis Training

The Regional Coordinating Board (DPK) of the Indonesian Rural Banks Association (Perbarindo) East Bali has given special attention to Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) in Klungkung, Bangli, and Karangasem Regencies by organizing credit analyst training in Denpasar on Saturday (July 6).

Chairman of DPK Perbarindo East Bali, Ketut Wirama, stated that NPLs initially stem from insufficient credit analysis skills among Rural Bank (BPR) personnel. He believes that by strengthening credit analysis capabilities, NPLs can be reduced.

“We propose that credit analysis be carried out earlier, so that we can minimize NPLs as we improve the way we assess our customers’ creditworthiness. This is the foundation of the credit analyst training,” he explained.

He acknowledged that NPLs come from almost all sectors, including consumer loans, with working capital loans being the most dominant contributor to the rise in problem loans. “One of the causes is the impact of Mount Agung’s activity. Up until last month, Mount Agung was still erupting. Although the eruptions were not large, they still affected economic activity in the disaster-prone area (KRB). Karangasem and Bangli happened to be affected by ashfall,” he said.

According to Wirama, several BPRs in the East Bali region have NPL ratios below 5%, and some even below 1%. “On average, the largest NPL contributors in the Karangasem area are quite high, and in Bangli, several were affected by the eruption,” he added.

Currently, Perbarindo East Bali has total assets of approximately IDR 549.7 billion, total loans of over IDR 337.8 billion, and third-party funds of over IDR 459.2 billion, with 348 employees serving 74,189 customers. BPRs in the eastern region have each developed their own products to encourage the public to place their funds in BPRs. “Third-party funds at BPRs in East Bali remain in good condition,” Wirama emphasized.

Meanwhile, Fajar, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Credit Analyst HR Training of DPK Perbarindo East Bali, said this was the first credit analyst training held in 2019. The association is committed to developing its human resources, as most staff are still high school graduates, so the quality of BPR personnel needs to be improved. “East Bali’s position is indeed above average, and through this training we hope to at least reduce the NPL level going forward,” Fajar stated.

He added that the training broadens staff knowledge, including the collection process. “The material focuses on credit analysis, as it is the first gateway that determines whether a loan should be disbursed. After that comes loan maintenance and collection,” Fajar explained.

I Gede Juliasta, Secretary of DPK Perbarindo East Bali, revealed plans to hold more activities aimed at improving competencies across all aspects of banking operations, starting with credit analysis, followed by training on loan maintenance and credit settlement measures, third-party fund collection (funding), marketing, and other areas. “We hope BPRs in East Bali will continue to grow,” he said.
